Do restaurants donate the food at the end of the night to a homeless shelter? Do they throw it in the trash?

Some restaurants donate their but unfortunately most don't. It requires extra effort to contact organizations to see who needs the food and whether the non-profit come and pick up the food. If not the restaurant also has to be willing to deliver the food at the end of a long day. It's easier just the throw it out. I worked in the food industy for years and was almost fired once because I gave our last pre-cooked hamburger to the dishwasher instead of throwing it in the trash.
