About Duson

Duson is a town on the edge of Lafayette Parish, Louisiana. Originally a stopping point on the Louisiana Western Railroad called "Duson Station," the town was formally incorporated in 1909. Cotton farming was the primary industry until the 1960's, when two of the town's three cotton gins were destroyed by fire. Recreation in Duson can be found at Judice Park, which offers tennis courts, lighted ball fields, jogging trails, and picnic areas. Entertainment can be found at Miss Mamie's casino or Tookie's Lounge and Sports Bar. Today the town's population is just over 1,500, and the area is about 2.6 square miles. Because the town is surrounded by large landholdings on all sides, growth is unlikely. This "landlocked" situation led to a 1993 book called "Duson-the town that cannot grow."
