About Opelousas
Opelousas is a city in and the parish seat of St. Landry Parish, Louisiana. The city was founded in 1720 and is the state's third largest city. Companies such as Targil Seasonings, Savoie's Cajun Meats & Products, LouAna Cooking Oil, and Chachere's products are located here giving the city the nickname "The Spice Capital of the World". Major attractions here include the Creole Heritage Folklife Center, which is one of the stops on the Louisiana African American Heritage Trail and the Evangeline Downs Racetrack and Casino. The city also hosts many annual events such as the Holy Ghost Creole Festival, the Zydeco Extravaganza and the Yambilee Festival. Among the biggest schools in the city are the New Hope Christian Academy and the Opelousas Senior High School. Famous people with ties to the city include two time Super Bowl champion Lloyd Mumphord and author John Ed Bradley.
