Is it possible there was never anything to find to start with. Was the case fully discussed with the investigator to determine if there was something to find out.

Maybe it was the fault of the investigator to not fully explain the process of investigations and your expectations. The investigator should explain depending on the type of case that there is a chance the findings might be different than expected.
