Newbury is a wonderful little coastal town located in Essex County Massachusetts and is south of the Merrimack River. Newbury is about 32 miles north-east of Boston and approximately 24 miles south of the legendary Portsmouth, New Hampshire, which was settled in 1603. Other nearby towns include, Newburyport and Plum Island, which are both very popular tourist spots. While much of Newbury is on marshes, it is a part of national historical places listed in Essex County. Painter Martin John Hede made this little town well-known in the art community with his painting, "Sunlight and Shadows: The Newbury Marshes (c. 1871-1875). Since Newbury is located in historical New England, it is known for its seasonal weather and rich history. Some notable people who have lived in Newbury are: William Dummer, the Lt. Governor of the Massachusetts Bay Colony, and abolitionist Joshua Coffin. It is hard to visit an area like Newbury without enjoying some historical sites. Some of the more popular historical museums are, The Spencer-Pierce Little Farm, which is one of the oldest buildings in Massachusetts, and currently a non-profit museum operated by Historic New England. The Swett-Ilsley House is also owned by Historic New England, and is one of Newbury's oldest homes. When visiting Newbury, drive up the road a bit to Newburyport and enjoy some great shops, restaurants and specialty stores. It is without a doubt one of the most adorable coastal towns in New England.
