About West Springfield

West Springfield is a part of the Springfield metro area of Massachusetts known for its beautiful scenic natural settings, deep ties to Revolutionary-era and Native American history, and transport and railroad industries. As of the 2000 census, the population of West Springfield was 27,899. The town is sometimes known as the "West Side," referencing the fact that it is on the west bank of the Connecticut River. Local businesses include Cerrato's Pastry Shop and KGW Design Studio. Many, if not most of the male population of West Springfield was involved in the American Revolution, most of the joining shortly after the historic Battle of Lexington and Concord, and West Springfield was also partially the site of Shay's Rebellion in 1787-1788. West Springfield has its own public library system, fire and police departments, post offices and many public and private schools. West Springfield is part of the New England Knowledge Corridor, a coalition and public works effort that seeks to expand opportunities and venues in the Hartfield-Springfield region, the second most populous region in the state after Boston.
