What is the cause of pipe condensation?

Usually a pipe will condensate if it is retaining water. Such as a pipe in the attic above your ceiling that is not adequately supported and dips in places or not pitched enough to flow properly. Insulating with a quality pipe insulation also helps prevent it. Set a glass on your counter with ice water in it and let it set a few minutes and it will condensate on the outside. Same concept. On the other hand sometimes pipes can condensate inside such as gas pipes in which case it can be blown into the orifices of furnaces and stoves. If its enough it can cause the flame to burn out or damage appliances.
