The mill town of Madison, named for the Madison Bridge, which was named for President James Madison, is located on the Kennebec River in Somerset County, Maine. Major attractions include the Lakewood Summer Theatre, which is the oldest continually operating summer theatre in the country and the nearby, 62-foot tall Skowhegan Indian, which was dedicated to Maine's Abnaki Indians. Each year in May, the Bill Smith Memorial Bluegrass Festival is held here as well as the Madison-Anson Days Celebration in August. With about 200 employees, Backyard Farms is one of the biggest employers in Madison. Some of the schools here are Madison Junior High School and Athens Elementary School. One of the best places to visit when you are in Madison is 5,021-acre Mount Blue State Park, located within 25 miles of the town and with a campground and sand beach.
