Peru is a town in Oxford County, Maine. Located on the banks of the Androscoggin River it is also home to Worthley Pond, one of the clearest lakes and Maine. The South American country of Peru, gained independence the same year the town of Peru was incorporated, hence the name. Peru is a great place to go for leisurely family camping, camping, hiking, fishing, canoeing and boating or cross-country skiing or snowmobile riding in the winter. Puru's motto is “Neighbors helping Neighbors.” The town population is roughly 1600. Samuel Thurston, first congressional delegate from Oregon Territory lives in Peru.
