What is the current process for appropriately removing paint from a car to repaint it?
I will do my best to answer this question more as professional in the auto body business and less from a woman's point of view.....LOL.
From a professional standpoint, color is not really that relevant as far as the painting procedure itself is concerned. Some colors ARE more expensive than others and these include the reds and some factory mixed silvers and other metal tones. Basically, the prepping of the car is standard no matter what the color. When prepping a car for a complete paint job, the existing paint is sanded down to provide a good, smooth, unmarred base for the new primer. All body work such as filling in dents, dings, heavy scratches and other imperfections are taken care of at this point. It is usually not necessary to totally remove the existing finish unless the existing finish is not compatable with the new paint. Your body shop will be able to tell you what is required as far as prepping the vehicle is concerned.
When choosing a color, keep in mind that you are ONLY changing the "outside" of the vehicle. So, unless you are planning on re-doing the interior also, it's a good idea to keep within a color that will go well with the interior of the vehicle! (There's that woman thing commin out....ooops!)
Todays paints are available in just about any color or configuration that you can think of. You should keep in mind that the "fancier" the color, ie. metal flake, pearls, candies, and flip/flop and chameleon colors are obviously more expensive not only to purchase, but to apply. Your most "cost effective" paint job will be a factory, one tone color. Also, keep in mind that if the car is older, and depending on how much prep work you want to invest in, lighter colors like silver and pearl colors will make imperfections in the sheet metal more visible, whereas, darker colors are less conspicuous.
Two tone paint jobs are visually appealing and can give a "newer look" to some of the older vehicles. Two tone paint jobs are also cost effective and not really that much more expensive to apply. Something to think about when trying to "spruce up" an older vehicle and give it a little more "eye appeal"!
I hope I have helped answer some of your questions. If you need any further information, please feel free to contact one of our certified paint specialists. They will be happy to answer any additional questions you might have. You can call the shop or use the "contact us" section on our website.
Good luck with your vehicle and Happy Holidays!
