About Kalispell

Kalispell is the largest city in Northwestern Montana and county seat for Flathead County. Bordered by two national forests, Kootenai and Flathead, the city is located only seven miles from Flathead Lake. Both tourists and residents enjoy hiking, fly-fishing, and other outdoor and mountain activities. In search of natural beauty, so abundant in the area, artists have moved in and have established more than two dozen galleries. Another major attraction is Glacier National Park, only 30 miles away. The park gives Kalispell's annual jazz festival, held every October, its name: the Glacier Jazz Stampede. With all of these activities, businesses have been growing, and the Chamber of Commerce lists more than 700 company members. Students attend Kalispell Public Schools. A number of notable residents have hailed from Kalispell, including former Montana Governor, John Edward Erickson. The Salish people coined the city's name, which means "flat land above the lake."
