Shelby is the county seat of Toole County in northern Montana. The largest employer is Crossroads Correctional Facility. Students attend Shelby Public School District 14. A fun way to see town is to walk or bike the Roadrunner Recreation Trail. The paved trail, nearing completion, goes from downtown to Lake Sheloole and provides views of the Rocky Mountains, prairie, and Sweetgrass Hills. The year 2010 marks the Centennial of Shelby, which has planned a large celebration, including class reunions, an art show, and other events. Shelby was named for Peter Shelby, the General Manager of the Montana Central Railway.
