About Indianola

The city of Indianola originally served as the county seat of Red Willow County. However, when the railroad decided upon McCook as the mid-point terminal on its Omaha to Denver route, the county offices were moved there from Indianola, and its county seat status was lost. Indianola, located along Nebraska's southern border and known as "The Best Little City Out West," is home to such important businesses as McConville Farms, the Rocket Inn restaurant, and Schaffert Manufacturing, while Indianola's educational needs are served by the Indianola Schools. An interesting local attraction can be seen in Indianola's City Park, where you will find buried the remains of a Pawnee woman who lost her life at Massacre Canyon in a major battle between the Pawnee and the Sioux, and was buried on a bluff northwest of town. To save her grave from the threat of loss through erosion, Indianola residents took up a collection and, at their own expense, moved it to a safer place in City Park. Each year, Indianola celebrates Old Settlers Day, a well-attended three-day event. Indianola also honors previous graduates on a yearly basis at the All School Reunion, another popular annual tradition. Meanwhile, for historical purposes, the Indianola, Nebraska Historical Society continues to do an excellent job of documenting the city's long and colorful history.
