Johnstown, a village in northern Nebraska's Brown County, has a land area of one-half square mile. Its population in the year 2000 tallied up at only 53 residents, the median age of whom was 47 years, considerably older than the national average age of 36. In 1992, Johnstown had the distinction of being chosen as the shooting location for the CBS television movie, "O Pioneers!" Major Johnstown businesses include King Trucking and the L-Bow Room. Johnstown's old-fashioned Main Street, with its board sidewalks, is a major local attraction for anyone desiring a trip down memory lane. Johnstown also offers the popular pastimes of turkey, deer and duck hunting, and the Labor Day weekend Brown County Fair and Rodeo has grown into a well-attended and highly-anticipated annual Johnstown event. For those wishing to travel a little further afield, the Nature Conservancy maintains the Niobrara Valley Preserve sixteen miles north on Norden Road. The Conservancy has dedicated this 50,000-acre area to the preservation of a unique crossroads of five distinct ecological zones. Take a hike on either of the two self-guided hiking trails, and you might be fortunate enough to stumble upon the resident herd of bison which grows ever larger by the year.
