Durham is located in Strafford County, New Hampshire with a population, according to the 2000 census, of 12,664. Durham is home to the University of New Hampshire which is a large area employer. Durham is beside Great Bay at the mouth of the Oyster River and developed as a farming community. The University of New Hampshire was originally an agricultural college and has many historical buildings. Its Thompson Hall, built in 1892, is on the National Registry of Historic Places. Durham is also home to the Durham Historic Association & Museum. Emery Farm and the Kingman Research Farm are also located here. Famous residents include writers Daniel Ford and Joyce Maynard.
