Do you feel that tutoring in small groups or one-on-one is more effective? What are the advantages and disadvantages of each?
1 to 1 versus small groups Tutoring: The most effective method of tutoring depends upon the subject at hand, the student, and the objectives of the tutoring. Yet, in general, 1 to 1 tutoring is likely to be the most effective method for a number of reasons, including the following:
1. 1 to 1 can be highly individualized in order to meet the needs of the student.
2. With 1 to 1, the tutor is more likely to keep the students full attention on the task at hand, and avoid distractions.
3. With 1 to 1, the tutor can provide several explanations until the student fully understands. The student is also more likely to be quite comfortable asking questions as compared to being part of a small group.
Of course, the topic being taught also impacts the best method for tutoring. I can list every topic, however, I provide 1 to 1 tutoring (coaching) for beginning web design students who are primarily business owners, church organizations, and self employed.
In this scenario, it's not effective to begin with 1 to 1 tutoring. Instead, I recommend my students begin by gaining baseline knowledge via my Training DVDs and/or Self-Paced Online Class.
After gaining the basic skills and knowledge, some students require additional help that is geared specifically towards the web site they seek to build. This is where 1 to 1 becomes extremely effective. No two web sites are alike.
Now let's assume a high school student failed algebra and has the option to take a summer school class or hire a private tutor. Which is best? Well, here we must consider the qualities of the student and the ability of the parents' to pay for a private tutor.
If a student has difficulty paying attention, retaining information, has a learning disability, or has difficulty completing assignments, then a private tutor may be the most effective option. Beware, the cost of a private tutor can range any where from $20 to $70. The school may require 20 hours of private tutoring in order to give a passing grade. The price then ranges from $400 to $1400.
Tutoring done in small groups can be effective for students who really just need a second chance. A greater number of students can be taught at one time, and the cost is usually very affordable for most parents.
In summary, the answer is not black nor white. Instead, many shades of gray exist. Therefore, it is recommended that all factors be considered so as to find the most effective tutoring method. Parents can discuss this with the school before deciding.
As for beginning Web Designers, I like to have potential 1 to 1 students email or call me to tell me about their situation. I emphasize that I do not do the work for them. Rather, I help them problem solve, and I share my knowledge and expertise in the area of CSS and HTML. I also make suggestions based upon the resources available online and my past experience.
