What is the difference between an 80% and a 90% furnace and how does one choose which is more suitable to his/her needs?
There are actually still some older 70% furnaces in operation out there.
The difference between 80% and 90% is the amount heat that is actually used in reference to the fuel being burned.
80% is able to capture and use 80% of the heat generated by the burnt fuel while 90% is able to capture and use 90% of the heat generated by the burnt fuel.
20% of the heat is wasted on an 80% furnace and only 10% of heat is wasted on a 90%.
Where does it go?? The captured heat is used for your home and the wasted heat escapes with the flue gases leaving your furnace.
A 90% furnace is able to capture and use more heat by incorporating a coil/radiator of sorts. Instead of the gas exhaust/fumes escaping right after passing through the heat exchanger it is forced or passed through a radiator/coil installed after a traditional heat exchanger. The gas fumes actually cool to a point where the moisture condenses out of the gas exhuast. This is why 90% furnaces are also referred to as condensing furnaces.
90% is always going to be the best choice for comfort...hands down.
