Fort Stanton is in Lincoln County New Mexico in the middle of the Lincoln National Forest. Major attractions include the fort itself and Smokey Bear Historical Park. Each year in the summer the Fort Stanton Pioneer Endurance Ride takes place and lasts about six days. Among the biggest companies in Fort Stanton are Civigenics and Camp Sierra Blanca. The biggest schools here are Capitan Elementary and Ruidoso High School. Fort Stanton was built in 1855 and named for Captain Henry W. Stanton who was killed in a fight with the local Mescalero Apache Indians. Billy the Kid was housed for a time in Fort Stanton's guardhouse awaiting a hanging--though it never took place.
