Fort Wingate, near Gallup, New Mexico known for its inauspicious history with the native people of the area. Located on the southern edge of the Navajo and Zuni territory in 1862, the initial purpose of the fort was to control the large Navajo tribe to its north. It was involved in 1864 with the forced Navajo's Long Walk from their reservation to the southwestern part of the state. Major attractions include sites of rich cultural heritage and historical significance as well as over 600 archeological sites. Among the biggest companies in Fort Wingate are US Department of Agriculture Forest Service, and Bowers Electric. The biggest schools here are Fort Wingate High School and elementary school. Fort Wingate was closed in 1993. Famous persons from Fort Wingate include Kit Carson.
