Gallup is the county seat of McKinley County and the center of a cultural crossroads, representing the Navajo, Zuni, and Hopi tribes. The city is a transportation crossroads as well, with rail lines and I-40 passing through. The University of New Mexico-Gallup is a major employer and educational institution. The tourism industry also offers employment, and the city is a shopping destination that attracts arts and crafts from all over the region. Richardson's Trading Post offers the largest selection of Navajo rugs in the Southwest, while galleries dot the downtown. The center of town, courthouse square, hosts nightly Indian dances in the summer. Within the square, a Veterans' Memorial Walkway honors local residents who have served our country, including the famous Navajo codetalkers, who provided invaluable help in wartime communications. Outside of town, Red Rock Park showcases scenic beauty, featured in many classic Westerns, and offers amenities such as an amphitheater, conference center, trails, and campgrounds. The city holds many festivals, including the Annual Lions Rodeo and Barbeque and the Gallup Inter-Tribal Indian Ceremonial. A famous resident is Onawa Lacy, Miss New Mexico USA 2006.
