The village of Magdalena, named for the nearby Magdalena Peak, so named because the rock formations were believed to resemble Mary Magdalene, is located in Socorro County, New Mexico. Some scenes for the movies "Armageddon" and "Contact" were filmed here. Major attractions within minutes of Magdalena include Kelly Ghost Town and the National Radio Astronomy Observatory, which designs, builds, and runs the world's most sophisticated radio telescopes for scientists to study the universe. Each year in July the Magdalena Old Timers Reunion is held here. Some of the businesses in Magdalena are New Mexico Property Connection and Western Bed & Breakfast & RV Park. One of the best places to visit when you are in Magdalena is the Box Car Museum, which displays old photographs and objects of frontier life.
