About Truth Or Consequences
Truth or Consequences, often abbreviated to T or C, is the county seat of Sierra County, about 140 miles south of Albuquerque. A major employer is the New Mexico State Veterans' Hospital. Students attend the Truth or Consequences Municipal School District. The city is famous for hot springs, and several spas are situated on free-flowing water sources. Supplementing the spas are a number of golf courses and other resort amenities. Due to these geological water sources, the city was once known as Hot Springs. However, after Ralph Edwards, the host of the famous game show, offered to broadcast the program from the first town that changed its name to match the game, Hot Springs became Truth or Consequences. Edwards continued to visit the town, and a May festival has developed around the annual event.
