The town gained notoriety during the 2000 New York State senatorial race between Rudy Giuliani and Hillary Clinton. Farmersville was well known for the Farmersville Garbage Scandal. The town was first settled in 1805 but no permanent settlement was made until 1817. Farmersville became a town in 1821.
