Port Leyden is a part of the Lewis County region of New York with an elevation of 892 feet. The name is derived from the village's early history as a port on the Black River Canal. It is 17 miles south of Lowville, 6 miles north of Boonville, and 23 miles west-south-west of Old Forge. Among the biggest companies in Port Leyden is Veritact, Inc. and Dan Covey Refrigeration. The biggest schools here are Port Leyden Elementary Schools and Lewis Central Middle High School. Port Leyden was once known as Kelsey's Mills. The Black River divides the community.
