About Somers

Somers is a town located in northeastern Westchester County, New York. The town had a total population of 18,346 in the 2000 census. The Commuter Railroad provides transportation to Grand Central Terminal in Manhattan Manhattan, which takes about an hour. New York known for being the "cradle of the American circus" because Hachaliah Bailey bought an African Elephant to use for farm work. Because of all the people that it attracted, others began to tour with exotic animals, and during the 1830s the circus and Bailey's attractions merged to become modern circus. The Elephant Hotel in Somers is in honor of the elephant and is now a National Historic Landmark. Major attractions include Lake Lincolndale, Park and Arboretum, and Muscoot Farm. Among the biggest companies in Somers are Pepsi and IBM, with corporate facilities. Famous persons from Somers include Billy Collins, poet Laureate, and Matthew Aaron Goodman, novelist.
