Cheshire is located in Gallia County, Ohio along the Ohio River. At the 2000 census the population was counted at 221. In 2000, subjected to sulfurous gas clouds and acid rain from a nearby coal-powered plant, the residents of the village hired lawyers to request that the company buy them out. In 2002, the American Electric Power Company decided to expand the plant property and paid the village residents for their land. Many residents left the village at this time but some residents remain and in 2004 they expanded the village limits by annexing properties a mile to the north and west. Famous residents of Cheshire include businessman Harvey V. Higley. River Valley High School is the village's largest school. Cheshire businesses include the Ohio Valley Electric Corporation and Jaymar Inc. Area attractions include Alum Creek Lake, Alum Creek State Park, and Blackhawk Country Club.
