About Germantown

Germantown, in Montgomery County, is part of the Dayton metropolitan area. Major employers in Dayton focus on manufacturing, including Delphi, General Motors, and Behr. Students attend the Valley View Local School District. City residents have honored and preserved their history. Six buildings, from a mansion to a mill to a homestead, and the entire downtown business district are historical landmarks, laid out in a walking tour guide. Outside town, bridge fans can view a romantic span, the Germantown Covered Bridge, which is painted white and dates from 1870. Fall brings the Pretzel Festival, with celebrations of music, arts and crafts, food, and curved treats. The city was founded by Philip Gunkel, a German-speaking settler who established a grist mill. German was widely spoken until the early 1900s in the area.
