Tax question on depreciated property bought in previous tax year but not used until current

I have a piece of equipment that I forgot to add as depreciable property for 2009 taxes (it was purchased in 2009) and technically I didn't use it until this year. Is it possible to put it on 2010 tax ...

Roberg Tax Solutions image Answered by Roberg Tax Solutions

Yes. The basis would be the lesser of the item's fair market value or it's adjusted basis at the time you started using it for business. (For example if the equipment was $2000 when you bought it, but 6 months later is was only worth $1500, you'd use $1500.) What you won't be able to do is take a Section 179 election-where you write of the whole amount of what was purchased. That would have to have been claimed in the year the item was purchased.
