How does one repair a running toilet?

Replace the fill coumn on the toilet--it is usually on the left side of the interior of the tank and has a lever on the top attached to a floating thing. The lever lets water into the tank to fill it until the water reaches a certain level, when the float rises up and raises the lever to shut off the water. I find that often, the gasket around the lever gets crud in it or simply rots away, and needs to be replaced. The simplest way to do this is to get a new fill column (typically <$10 at a hardware or plumbing store) and replace the old one. Takes ~15 minutes.
