In CA, the notary can be a friend as long as the friend does not have an interest in what they are notarizing. This is called a pecuniary interest, meaning that there is some form of monetary gain or benefit to the notary. For example, my friend could ask me to notarize their will for them, but in the will I am a name beneficiary, I would not be able to notarize the will. Hope this helps.
