White smoke is usually the result of coolant leaking into the engine cylinders. Black smoke is usually caused by an engine running very rich, more fuel than can be burned. Blue smoke is caused by engine oil in the cylinders, either leaking past the rings or past the valve seals. The catalytic converter will reduce and mask some of this, if you are seeing it at the tailpipe you probably have a large leak. You need to have the problem diagnosed by a trained technician.
