Wakpala is an unincorporated town located in the northern area of South Dakota in Corson County. The name Wakpala means creek in the Indian Lakota language. Wakpala is situated on the Standing Rock Indian Reservation. It is believed that both Chief Gall and Sitting Bull may be buried here. Each August a major powwow called Wakpala Wacipi is held. The local public schools are part of the Smee School District. The town is very small and has very few services and businesses.Local businesses include Wakpala Water Treatment Plant and Head Start.
