Durability, ease of use. You can spend $1,200 on a rod & reel but if you only go fishing a few times a year it's not worth it. It doesn't have to be expensive to be good. I have an Ugly Stick I got from Walmart for $20, including the reel. It's almost 10 years old & works just fine. (I have since switched to better reels) My husband & brother-in-law have spent Hundreds of dollars on a rod, then snapped the tip off. After much swearing & jumping up & down they sheepishly turn to me & ask to borrow one of my "cheap" rods so the day isn't ruined & they can keep fishing. I catch just as many fish as they do, just as large.

You must consider where you'll be fishing - if there's a lot of trees, you're fishing from shore - you'll want a shorter rod so you don't get snagged. On open water in a boat you can use a much longer rod. A good reel is worth it - try them out, see if it "sticks" or runs smoothly. Is it comfortable in your hand? I like shimano reels, with as high a gear ratio as you can afford.

dry storage is where your boat is NOT in the water either they take your boat up on a lift or you park it on your trailer. Wet storage is where you leave your boat in the water. I don't recommend wet storage for a couple things. One you have to have special paint on your boat to protect it, Also you have to have the barnicles cleaned off and it can damage your motor.
