There are several options available and would most likely depend on the homeowners budget and preference. Since you mentioned your existing unit will not fit through the doorway, I am assuming you are speaking of a fiberglass unit and replacing it with another fiberglass unit.

Fiberglass tub and shower units come in a 3 piece design for remodeling. The old unit would be cut out in piece and the new unit assembled in place once the area has been prepped. These types of units also come as just a shower and there are handicap options for those who desire this type of change.

Ink cartridges don't dry up as much as they clog. The jets at the print head are microscopic, so it doesn't take much for them to clog. If you don't print much, be sure to print something at least every few days just to move the ink through the print heads a little.

The XL cartridges from HP, when available, offer 3x the ink at 2x the price, so that helps some. Kodak advertises cheaper ink, but I haven't personally tested them for quality, speed, and durability.

Beyond that, there are ink refill kits, and 3rd party cartridges over the Internet, but expect that the colors may vary somewhat from the brand name inks; if printing photos, you may have to calibrate your colors.
