About Hopewell

Hopewell is part of the Richmond metro area of Virginia and is located 24 miles southeast of the capital city. The city is situated at the confluence of the James and Appomattox rivers, which in the 1800s served as one of the busiest ports in the world. Today, the local economy is still vibrant. Major employers include Allied Signal and Columbia HCA John Randolph. Students attend Hopewell City Public Schools. Due to the city's key river location, General Grant set up headquarters there during the Civil War. Visitors learn about his battle strategy at Grant Headquarters at City Point, a unique local attraction. They can buy their own Civil War relics at antiques stores in the downtown. The downtown also hosts a music series in the summer. Apart from General Grant, a famous past visitor was Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., who persuasively defended civil rights in a Hopewell courtroom.
