Barre is a city in Washington County, Vermont. As of the 2000 census the population was 9,291. It is the largest city in Washington County, and is located next to Montpelier, which has a population of 8,035. Barre is the self proclaimed "Granite Center of the World", with granite having been discovered there soon after the War of 1812. The granite industry in Barre boomed, with people coming from around the world to work. Some popular local attractions include the Barre Opera House, and the Barre Museum. One of the best places to visit in Barre, especially if one finds particular interest in the city's granite history, is the Vermont Granite Museum. The largest schools in Barre are the Barre Town Elementary School, and the Barre Supervisory Union School. Middlebury College is located 37 miles away in Middlebury, Vermont. Some famous persons from Barre include author Katerine Paterson and artist Fred Swan.

A CD from 1988 most probably would have been cashed-in a long time ago. If you can't contact the bank, go to your state's secretary of state web site to search the unclaimed assets listings to see if the CD proceeds were sent to the government.
