Mazama is located east of the Cascades summit and offers spectacular views and fantastic hiking. The Methow Valley Sports Trails Association maintains a trail system connecting two towns. The entire valley is riddled with hiking nirvana. In winter the same trails offer cross-country skiing and snowmobiling to your hearts content. Forests of Douglas fir and Ponderosa pine cover Mazama and the surrounding area. Mazama's town center elevation is 2,178 feet and is located 2.7 miles south, and 4,700 feet below Goat Peak. Mazama and Winthrop recorded the coldest temperature ever measured in Washington state at −48 °F in 1968. Local businesses include Glass Works of Winthrop and Mazama County Store.
