All "Fair Trade" is not the same, but I think it is worth looking closely at the offerings labeled "Fair Trade" and asking some questions. Here is an example which might help answer your question.
1. Tribal Textiles/Options for Children of Zambia. The beautiful textiles which are amazing for home decorating as cushion covers, wall hangings, table cloths or runners, placemats, and more are made in Zambia, Africa. They are handmade by people in the village who work for the Tribal Textiles company in Zambia. The sale of the textiles helps the economy in the village; the company supports the free school there; the workers are in good conditions and paid a living wage. How do I know that? Members of the non-profit Options for Children of Zambia, www.optionsforchildren.org have been there, interviewed the workers, and seen the conditions. They have also brought dental health care to those workers.
The non-profit supports the company by purchasing Tribal Textiles to sell in the United States. Via Creativa sells the Tribal Textiles online and in Virginia Beach and sends the money back to the non-profit. Options for Children of Zambia in turn has helped the development of another rural village in Zambia which doesn't have an industry to help support it. They have developed a farm project there which helps to feed the AIDS orphans and relieve stress on the families who have taken the orphans in. The village has two bore holes for water thanks to the efforts of Options for Children and great supporters like the Rotary Club. The non-profit works with Zambian officials to continue to develop the economies, health care and lives of people in rural Zambia. The purchase of these Tribal Textiles (which are beautiful, colorfast and washable) here in the US benefits a diverse group of people in many ways.
