Other than black print on white paper, what color combinations are the easiest to read, particularly for elderly people?
The easiest to read color combinations for print on paper would be most any high contrast combination of dark ink on light background color/paper. But keep in mind that reading large amounts of high contrast text can tire the eyes at any age. Also, for some with health problems such as dyslexia, high contrast text is more difficult to read. --- A very light tint of the dark ink color at say 80% softens the starkness of dark text and will allow most readers to get through longer amounts of copy. --- Keeping away from color combinations that are of similar colors such as a dark green text on a light green paper is a good idea too because for some, this type of color usage just appears to be the same color and is difficult to read. --- Also, it is not a good idea to print text in bright or reflective colors as these are too stark to be looked at for extended periods of time such as for 'reading' content. --- It is good to keep in mind the media on which your text is appearing. If you are designing a piece that is to be commercially printed on paper will have different ways you can use colors vs. designing a webpage or web ad which has the light reflecting from behind it and colors combinations will behave differently. --- Keep in mind the amount of text to be printed also, ie: multiple paragraphs of relatively small text need to be much more pleasing to the eye than a 3 word headline or call to action that is in a huge font and will only be glanced at for a few seconds. --- Additionally, to increase readability, other factors need to be considered: large print (12 or 14 pt.) for body copy is always good to use along with a good amount of leading such as 12/14 or even more if you don't have a lot of copy. This is especially true when designing documents or other materials where the target audience is the elderly. --- With that said, reverse contrasting colors such as white text on a very dark or black background would be relatively easy for elderly people to read as long as the text is large. A good amount of spacing in between columns, shorter lines of text and wide margins also aid in legibility and would allow you to get more creative with your color combinations. --- Feel free to contact me directly if you would like a personal consultation to help you with your project. Peace and success, Claudia Beck
