FortGay is a town in Wayne County, West Virginia which adjoins Louisa, Kentucky. It is situated along the Tug Fork and Big Sandy Rivers. The population, as of the 2000 census, was 819 . Originally chartered in 1875 as Cassville, its name was changed to FortGay in 1932. According to local legend, Wardy Lovely, who was a member of the city council and a local educator, became fed up with the locals smearing mud on the initial C on city signs and convinced the local government to change the name of the town. When visiting FortGay, be sure to cross the bridge to Louisa Kentucky. It is a quarter-mile concrete span which spans two forks of the Big Sandy River, connects two states and has a right turn at its halfway point. Every second weekend in September, the city of Louisa hosts the regional Septemberfest that features local and national acts performing for three days, as well as the huge arts and crafts bazaar with many food vendors featuring Southeastern cuisine. Local businesses include Candle Heaven, Raisinghuskys Kennel, and Cuttin Up With Doyle.
