The batteries also had run out too within about the first couple months of move-in so either the previous tenant didn't buy new batteries or they bought new 9 volt batteries and kept the new ones and then put old ones in the detectors.
Their smoke detectors are ionization smoke alarms too. Photoelectric alarms are proper alarms that save lives. But Ionization alarms are alarms that don't detect fires well and go off from false alarms all the time. In fact, every single time I took a shower, the alarms would go off. There were five of them in the unit. So to live there I had to have these things taken down and removed, which how they're fixed into the ceilings was a difficult task. I, of course, put them back before I moved out. New Valley never knew.

I want to point out that the smoke detectors in the unit were both battery and electric. When the batteries went low, they would squeal loudly (they only started at 2am-4am, never waking hours) using the power from electricity to tell me to change the batteries, but if I removed the batteries then the squealing stopped. Whenever the power went out, all the smoke detectors would go off using the power from the batteries, complaining of no electricity, which sucks because when the power is out the only thing I can do a lot of times is try to nap and wait for it to come back. So by the time I moved out, I had removed all the batteries from the smoke detectors and they're designed so you can't close them without a battery in them without using tweezers to push a small part in, forcing them against their will to close.
