What are the filing requirements for people who work at home?
"Anything reasonable, ordinary, and necessary for you to generate income in your type of business can be claimed as an expense.
With more and more people working from home, the home office deduction is a great tool for self employed people working out of a spare room in their house.
Vehicle mileage is also another lucrative expense that is worth the time to track and record properly.
Meals with clients, propects, colleagues, etc. are also deductible, as long as the reason for meeting is business related.
If you go to www.irs.gov and search for Publication 535, you will find detailed information on business expenses, how to deduct them, and what is not allowable.
You can also visit our website at www.seacoastaccountability.com for specific information about the home office and vehicle mileage deductions."
My new business is organized as an LLC. What expenses are typically tax deductable?
"In general, all expenses that are necessary, reasonable, and ordinary in the production of income for your industry are allowable expenses. Of course, there will be areas that are not clear cut at times.
Some items are written off ratably, by means of amortization or depreciation. This would apply to assets, or big ticket items with a useful life of more than one year, such as your furniture and computers. There is also accelerated depreciation methods that can be implemented to expense all or part of these items in the first year, if they qualify.
Supplies, on the other hand, are usually regular expenses that are taken in full each year. Depending on the type of business you are in, the costs may be associated with sales, and enter into a calculation called Cost of Goods Sold. This matches the supply expense with the revenue generated and usually relates to inventory items or supplies and materials other than general administrative supplies. For example, office supplies, would be written off as an expense without any adjustment relative to sales.
I would advise you to seek an accountant or tax professional to help you understand these concepts."
