It won't dull the finish as long as you don't put it in direct sunlight. One thing to note: if a liquid is spilled on top of the glass, there is a possiblilty that it can roll over the edge and under the glass onto the table. One final note - the use of plastic spacers between the glass and the table is not something I would recommend. They tend to stick and mar the finish.

Plastic and rubber contain petroleum distillates which will cause plastisizer migration, which chemically will soften the plastic/rubber and finish- melding them together as one.
Another note about the glass top, do not have the piece in direct sunlight or near an a/c vent. Glass is cooler than room temperature than that of wood- and condensation of water vapor in the air will blush between the glass and finish. Keep an eye on it.

Adding a glass top will protect the finish, as well as the top and inlay. Note also: use only cotton felt protectors between the glass and the finished top. Plastic or rubber will damage the finish. Remove the glass top and clean often. Remove glass in the event of a spill and clean up immediately.

The glass itself will not dull the finish. However, if the glass top sits directly on the piece, you do chance having the glass lift up the finish or veneer (stick to the glass) if the glass is ever removed. The best way to avoid this would be to purchase clear, thin plastic 'bumpers', available at any hardware store and place the adhesive side of the bumper on the glass, not the top! The space created between the piece and the glass top will also allow the wood the 'breathe', especially important in older pieces.

Clean the top carefully, using a product suited to the finish and the wood. Place the glass on top using clear bumpers- they come in lots of sizes from the hardware store. The glass will not harm the piece, however direct sunlight wil.l

Glass won't dull the finish, it will protect it. I recommend to put a few of the typical "spacers" the glass service can supply so there is air flow under the glass and moisture won't get trapped which could cause finish problems.
