In actuality, the document is not notarized - the person's signature is what is notarized. Having the signature notarized means the person signing the document is identified by their ID and the Notary watches them sign the paperwork. They then sign the Notary's journal (in states where a journal is required) and they also provide a thumbprint. This cuts down on fraud and forgery. Also, a person cannot lie and claim that they DIDN'T sign paperwork - the Notary has their ID info, signature and thumbprint in their journal as proof that the person DID, in fact, sign the paperwork.Answered by Lisa Thornton, Notary Public Upland, CA, 91786, 909-231-7691 (Novice with 13 pts.)

it validates the signature of the person signing the document(s) The notary will first identify the people signing the document and will also document the transaction in his/her notary journal.
