Variable Data Printing (VDP) is a method of incorporating personalization into every printed piece. It involves integrating a database with printing resulting in marketing pieces that are unique for each individual, thus increasing response rates. VDP is often combined with QR codes and/or PURLS to further enhance customer interaction and to gather respondent data.

VDP projects require a higher level of sophistication and software/hardware investment than regular 'static' printing and therefore cost more. However, if done correctly, the benefits far outweigh the additional cost.

Unlike traditional offset printing, variable data printing is produced on more expensive printing equipment with more expensive consumables with each and every piece (or sheet) being different. Additionally, the file must be manipulated -- merged and/or ripped (raster image processed) to be output. Variable data printing takes quite a lot longer to produce but can be a worthwhile investment.

Variable data printing lets you personalize your message to each person. It is done on digital presses. It is a very effective way of targeting your customers.
