The development of the personal computer revolutionized nearly every industry, and traditional printing is no exception. Until the late 1980s, professional printing was done on large offset or web printing presses using printing plates. Which are expensive to set up. If you printed just one page on an offset press it would be very expensive. This was because of the need for prepress, film, match prints, plates, striping, and make ready pre-runs. After you start the printing the cost per piece is very cheap.
That is why you would need to print so many pieces to get the cost down per piece. The problem with that was things change. Most of the leftovers would end up in the dump, or in a warehouse that you kept to store all that paper.
With “On Demand Printing” there is no set up cost. It is not needed. The digital file is sent to the printer just like you would do it from your printer at home. The difference between your printer at home and a commercial digital press is SPEED and COST and to some extent quality although the quality of home printers is just about the same now days. The cost per piece for on-demand printing is much less for the first thousand pieces and most of the time you don’t need more than a thousand pieces.
With on-demand printing you print only what you need to meet your market demand. This technology is great for publishers as it enables them to print both paperback and hardcover books “on demand” as orders are received, rather than doing large print runs that sit in warehouses, waiting for orders. Print-on-demand book technology helps reduce costs by printing books specific to each bookseller’s order. Because there are no big up-front printing costs,
As far as quality go’s there are some trade offs… but the trade offs are so small with the new equipment and a skilled operator that it is usually not an issue.
