Website design is a science not an art. There are many skills used to design and develop a viable web presence.

A graphic designer knows how to use photoshop and make flyers and things look cool, a web designer knows how to design a website for the end user but its a web developer that actually knows how to properly program the website into a functional, SEO friendly, platform.

Also a website needs to be marketed and optimized and updated to be in compliance with the ever changing search engine standards.

You should always hire a web design professional to build your website. A good web design professional may have the skills of a graphic artist or more likely employ a good graphic artist, but there is a great deal more to web site design than the graphics. In fact, too strong a focus on the graphics can reduce the effectiveness of a your web site.
A good Web Designer will not only build you a site that "looks" good, they will build you a site that does what you need it to do (gather leads, distribute information, make sales, etc.) and help make sure that your site is easily found by your potential customers.
The graphics are part of the total picture, get a web designer to build you a complete business website.

I'd like to suggest hiring a graphic artist first ... But let me explain.

Web coders are good at what they do - publishing information to the internet in a website that links and sends data and provides some interactivity, purchases etc.

Graphic Designers are good at what they do too - Presenting information and visuals (graphics) in a way that is intriguing to the visitor, and easy to navigate. They also know how to condense information into something that your visitors will in-fact "Read".

That being said, most Graphic Designers can do some web design, and most Web Coders can do some graphic design. So you have to decide whether your site is more "Graphic/Visual oriented" or if it is more "Technical/Tools oriented".

What I'd do is find some sites you really like, out there on the internet. Show them as samples to both the Web Coder and the Graphic Designer. Explain exactly what you like best about the site. See if they can do both the visual design and the coding that makes the site(s) work. If they can not do all of it, hire both of them. Engage them to work together too!

I hope this helps. Please feel free to "friend" us in Merchant Circle. Or contact us at any time via www.creativebearings.com. We offer graphic design, web design, flash animation, logo design as well as all kinds of print and web marketing.

If you have to choose one or the other, choose a web designer with a decent portfolio.
