The same way you choose a good hairstylist or real estate professionial -- start by talking to friends and family whose opinions you trust.
Both of these professions are entrusted with extremely important tasks in the scope of your life. If you get a bad haircut, you might not want to be seen in public. If you choose a bad real estate professional, you stand to lose many thousands of dollars
If you choose a poor limousine service, especially for something like a wedding day, prom, anniversary or other important event, you may possibly have poor memories of a day everyone hopes will be spectacular. A limousine driver is also charged with your personal safety, so few jobs can compare to that of a limousine driver.
Ask about the age, make and model of their vehicles. Ask how often they perform maintenance. Be sure the drivers are screened, trained and drug-tested. Check with your state agency that oversees transportation providers -- in California, it is the California Public Utilities Commission. They can tell you if a limousine company is in full compliance with state law, if they're properly insured and if they are paying the workman's compensation taxes required by the state.
Here, it is a passenger's responsibility to hire a properly licensed and insured company.
The way you are treated on the phone is a good first start. If the customer service agent's phone manner is too casual, too familiar or too cold, you may want to look for a company that has warm, responsive, helpful but professional people on the phone.
Finally, do not go with a company who will not provide a written contract spelling out all rates and fees, pick-up and drop-off times, etc. You should be able to get a professional-looking contract that reflects the details of your agreement with the limousine company.
