10 Ways to Declutter Your Home
As summer is quickly approaching, now is the best time to let go of excess stuff and make your home better organized. Having a well-organized home is easy and is also a liberating process. Many times you do not realize how much excess stuff is weighing you down, until you clean or remove those items from your home.
1. Go through each room in your home and review each item. Are these items used frequently, monthly, occasionally or never?
2. Any items that are used on a daily basis should be placed within reach so that you can use those items when you need them, instead of having to search for them.
3. Items that you use a few times per month should be put away in a drawer, cabinet or a space should be created for them in a closet.
4. Anything that is in a home that is not used more than a few times per year should be evaluated based on its return on investment and level of enjoyment that it brings. If an item is something that can be lived without, then it is time for that item to go.
5. Instead of throwing items away, see if you can donate them. The items in your home that are going unused could be exactly what someone in your town is looking for.
Higher value items like newer computers, laptops, digital camera or home entertainment equipment that are unused in a home should be sold on eBay or through websites like craigslist.
6. Remove any excess bills, newspapers, magazines and books lying around your house and create a “home” for each item, so as new items come in they will not just end up on the kitchen counter, coffee table or floor.
7. Every home has one or two junk drawers that are stuffed with excess stuff that is never used. If your home has one or more drawers like this, open them up and toss any items that are not needed or never used.
8. Many people have items like a crocheted rug or blanket that was made by their favorite aunt but are never used. These items add to the clutter in a home and can only get in the way. The solution to this problem is to invest in space saving items like, a Space Bag, to package these items up and store them away and out of sight.
9. Some of the most abused areas of any home are the top of a refrigerator or tops of shelves. These areas usually become the collection point for old phone books, newspapers, dust and bugs. If you have areas like these in your home, seek them out and clean them up.
10. Many people become overburdened by clutter over time, because they do not remove the clutter from their homes. The easy way to do this is schedule time every three months to repeat the steps in this article and keep your home clutter free.
