How to Calculate AMT Tax

AMT Tax Tips

The AMT tax is starting to affect more middle-class taxpayers then ever before. Since this is the case, it is a good idea to find out whether you have to pay the alternative minimum tax. The AMT can be confusing to calculate and is a good idea to consult a tax professional to help with taxes. If calculated wrong you could pay too much or not pay enough and be liable for back taxes.

The alternative minimum tax was put into effect in the late 1960's. It was created to make sure that the wealthy paid a certain amount of tax. More and more people are finding themselves having to pay the alternative minimum tax, AMT. This is because the IRS has not calculated inflation into the AMT so more middle class taxpayers are starting to pay the AMT. There are several ways to help reduce the costs of your AMT.

  • Claim more itemized deductions on your tax return. Even if your itemized deductions are less than your standardized deductions, it is important to calculate itemized deductions. This is because the AMT does not allow standardized deductions so if you use the standardized deductions on your tax return then you cannot use the itemized deductions on your AMT.

  • Reducing your adjusted gross income, AGI is another way to lower your AMT. This can be done with IRA's, 401k plans, and several other plans. There are several plans that help to reduce your taxable income.

To calculate whether you are liable for the AMT, the 6251 Form needs to be completed. This can be found on the IRS website along with directions. There are also several other tools to help you with your taxes.
